📱 Essential Apps Guide

Install these before you go — they'll make your China trip seamless.

Before departure checklist: ① Install VPN (can't download once in China) ② Register Alipay + WeChat, link foreign cards ③ Download offline translation packs and offline maps.
💳

Alipay

Essential ⭐ 💳 Payment

China's dominant mobile payment app. Covers everything from malls to street vendors. Since 2024, foreign bank cards (Visa, Mastercard) can be linked — no Chinese bank account needed.

Installation & Usage Steps

  • Download from App Store / Google Play before departure
  • Complete real-name verification with your passport
  • Link your foreign bank card (Visa/Mastercard/Amex)
  • Scan QR codes to pay — shop, eat, ride, all in one app
  • Show the 'Pay' QR code, merchant scans it — done
💬

WeChat

Essential ⭐ 💬 Chat + 💳 Pay

The 'super-app' every Chinese person uses daily — messaging, payments, mini-programs. Foreigners can register with a passport and link foreign bank cards for WeChat Pay.

Installation & Usage Steps

  • Download WeChat, register with your mobile number
  • Switch to Weixin Pay, verify identity with passport
  • Link Visa/Mastercard — scan to pay everywhere
  • Mini-programs let you use DiDi, Meituan, 12306 without extra downloads
  • Install both Alipay and WeChat as mutual backups
🚗

DiDi

Highly Recommended 🚗 Transport

China's Uber. Multi-language interface, register with foreign phone. In-app text-chat auto-translates — no language barrier. Cheaper than taxis with transparent pricing.

Installation & Usage Steps

  • Download DiDi (international or China version)
  • Link Alipay or WeChat Pay (cash also accepted)
  • App supports English UI and auto-translated driver messages
  • Choose 'Express' (cheapest) or 'Premier' (upscale)
  • Combine with metro during peak hours to avoid surge pricing
🗺️

Amap / Baidu Maps

Essential ⭐ 🗺️ Navigation

Google Maps is unreliable in China — outdated data, no real-time traffic. Amap (Gaode) and Baidu Maps are the local alternatives with accurate transit data. Amap has basic English.

Installation & Usage Steps

  • Amap (Gaode): basic English UI available
  • Baidu Maps: more features, mostly Chinese — pair with translation app
  • Supports walking, bus, metro, driving navigation
  • Real-time transit times and crowd levels
  • Download offline maps in advance to save data
🌐

VPN / Internet Tools

Essential ⭐ 🌐 Internet

Google, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Gmail, and YouTube are blocked in China. A VPN is essential — and you MUST install it BEFORE arriving. Once in China, VPN download sites are blocked.

Installation & Usage Steps

  • Install and test your VPN BEFORE departure
  • Prepare 2 VPN options as backup
  • Services that work without VPN: Bing, Microsoft 365, Outlook
  • WeChat, Alipay, and local apps don't need VPN
  • Some international roaming plans (Google Fi, T-Mobile) bypass the Great Firewall natively
🔤

Translation Tools

Highly Recommended 🔤 Translation

Most Chinese people don't speak English, especially in restaurants, taxis, and smaller cities. A translation app is a lifesaver. WeChat's built-in scan-translate is also excellent.

Installation & Usage Steps

  • Google Translate / DeepL: download Chinese offline pack
  • Camera translation: shoot menus, signs, tickets — instant recognition
  • Voice translation: communicate with drivers or staff who don't speak English
  • WeChat scan-to-translate: scan any Chinese text for instant translation
  • Learn 'xièxie' (thank you) — let the app handle the rest
🏨

Trip.com / Ctrip

Highly Recommended 🏨 Hotels & Booking

Ctrip is China's largest travel platform, Trip.com is its international version. Book hotels, train tickets, flights, and attraction tickets in one place. Trip.com's English interface is easier for foreigners.

Installation & Usage Steps

  • Trip.com: English UI, accepts foreign credit cards — best for hotels & trains
  • Ctrip: more options, potentially cheaper — requires Chinese reading ability
  • Note: hotels must have 'foreign guest reception' license — Trip.com filters these
  • In-app chat lets you message hotel front desk directly
🍜

Meituan / Dianping

Nice to Have 🍜 Food & Lifestyle

Find restaurants, read reviews, get deals, order takeout. Dianping is China's Yelp — locals' real reviews are the gold standard. Meituan handles food delivery, movie tickets, hotels.

Installation & Usage Steps

  • Dianping: filter by rating and per-person spend to find great restaurants
  • Meituan Waimai: order food delivery when you don't feel like going out
  • Both are Chinese-only — pair with a translation app
  • Look for 'Must-Eat List' (必吃榜) and 'Black Pearl' (黑珍珠) rankings
